The grainline on this large hooded umbrella drop spindle is gorgeous, with the long sides of the umbrella showing. The spindle is 2.8 ounces.

The Central American species of rosewood in the whorl and shaft of this spindle is called cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa); it differs from other rosewoods in density, hardness, and in its vibrant color and grain patterning. Cocobolo is neither endangered nor a rain forest timber and it is being successfully plantation-grown to insure its renewability.
